The style of the Castle is Fairy, Enchanting. This is the secret of its magic impact – a dream to build a castle existing only in fairy tales made true. It was built completely of 20 000 tons of stone, specially extracted from the bowels of the Strandzha Mountains. The stone is marble (metamorphosed limestone), which is used everywhere – in the fence, the artificial lake, walls and towers, the chapel and the cellar.

The earliest human presence on the island is evidenced during the period of late antiquity (IV – VI century). A proof of this is the abundant ceramic material found in underwater researches conducted in 1973.

4. STONE FOREST, VARNA

image

Pobiti Kamani  , also known as The Stone Desert, is a desert-like rock phenomenon located on the north west Varna Province border in Bulgaria. It is considered the only desert in Bulgaria and one of few found in Europe. The desert consists of sand dunes and several groups of natural rock formations on a total area of 13 kmІ. The formations are mainly stone columns between 5 and 7 meters high and from 0.3 to 3 meters thick. The columns do not have solid foundations, but are instead hollow and filled with sand, and look as if they were stuck into the surrounding sand, which gives the phenomenon its name. Sandstorms and sand twisters have also been known to commonly occur in this desert region of Bulgaria.

The reason some locals are hesitant to cross at night is rooted in dark lore. One story is that the head builder’s wife passed away during construction, so her shadow was encased in the structure. Another tale has it that the devil’s footprint can be found somewhere on the rocks. While this is all folkloric myth, its towering form does make for a somewhat unsettling vista in the darkness.
